Dr. Gretchen’s May Newsletter: Prioritizing Self-Care for Moms, Especially ADHD Moms

Mom carrying her child

Mother's Day is a time to celebrate and honor the incredible women who dedicate their lives to nurturing and caring for their families. However, amidst the busyness of motherhood, it's essential for moms to prioritize their mental health and well-being. In this blog post, we'll explore the importance of self-care for moms and share some practical tips on how they can take care of themselves so they can continue to be there for their children.

In addition, I want to give a special acknowledgment to all the ADHD moms out there and recognize the unique challenges you tackle every day. Despite these hurdles, I want you all to know that you are incredible mothers who deserve to be celebrated each and every day. Your strength, resilience, and unwavering love for your children inspire us all.

The Importance of Self-Care for Moms:

As mothers, it's common to prioritize our children's needs, but neglecting our mental health can harm us and our families. Self-care isn't selfish; it's essential for our well-being. Recently, I experienced the transformative power of self-care at a Somatic IFS retreat on the Island of Gozo. From this retreat, I learned the importance of combining somatic practices with yoga to release emotional blockages. As a result, I'm excited to offer several opportunities this month that integrate somatic processing and yoga to nurture our mind, body, and spirit.

Practical Self-Care Tips for Moms:

  1. Prioritize Sleep: Moms should aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.

  2. Set Boundaries: Learn to say no to excessive commitments.

  3. Practice Yoga: Yoga Nidra, deep breathing exercises, and asana practice.

  4. Connect with Others: Reach out to friends, and family members for connection.

  5. Make Time for Hobbies: Set aside time each week to engage in activities that you love.

  6. Create routines: Routines can reduce feelings of overwhelm and provide structure.
