The 5 Reasons ADHD and Neurodivergence Is Underdiagnosed In Women

ADHD symptoms can manifest differently in women compared to men whereas the classic symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity are often more pronounced in males, and females with ADHD may exhibit more discrete symptoms such as talkativeness, emotional dysregulation, and daydreaming. These symptoms can be less obvious and are sometimes mistaken for other conditions like anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PMS, and borderline personality disorder.

The list below is an explanation as to why women get misdiagnosed:

1. Gender Bias in Diagnosis: Healthcare professionals may not be as familiar with the unique ways ADHD can manifest in women.

2. Coping Mechanisms: Women with ADHD may develop coping strategies that mask their symptoms, at least temporarily. However, this can lead to burnout and mental health challenges.

3. Coexisting Conditions: Women with ADHD are more likely to have coexisting conditions such as anxiety, depression, and eating disorders which can lead clinicians to focus on treating the comorbid conditions rather than recognizing the primary issue.

4. Social Expectations: Societal expectations and gender roles can also play a role in the underdiagnosis of ADHD in women.

5. Stigma and Awareness: There may be a lack of awareness about ADHD in women. This can contribute to a delay in seeking diagnosis and treatment.
